A literature scan and framework of a diverse nursing workforce and its effect on the social determinants of health
This paper reviews vulnerable populations in the U.S. and suggest policies and practices that address the social determinants of health that particularly affect them. It also surveys the research that nurses are conducting currently (as of 2019) that is focused on the social determinants of health, and illustrates, using a framework produced by Health Resources and Services Administration’s Bureau of Health Professions, Division of Nursing, the positive link between more diverse health professions and better health outcomes.
Nurses and other health professionals can use this information to better understand various communities and populations, and in their efforts to create greater health equity.
