Throughout 2015, Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action leaders authored a series of articles that were published in both Nursing Outlook and the American Journal of Nursing (AJN). The articles are listed below.
“A Bold New Vision for America’s Health Care System”
This first article highlights the Campaign’s progress and challenges and looks at work that still lies ahead in five key areas for the Campaign: nursing education, access to care (scope of practice), workforce diversity, nurse leadership, and workforce data collection. Written by Sue Hassmiller, PhD, RN, FAAN, senior adviser for nursing, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and director of the Campaign for Action, and Susan Reinhard, PhD, RN, FAAN, senior vice president and director, AARP Public Policy Institute and chief strategist, Center to Champion Nursing in America, it was published in February 2015 in both Nursing Outlook and the American Journal of Nursing.
“Interprofessional Collaboration and Education: Working Together to Ensure Excellence in Health Care”
This article highlights the Campaign’s efforts to increase interprofessional collaboration and education among health care providers. It looks at the imperative to make the shift, as well as initiatives in a number of states to foster interprofessional collaboration and education. Interprofessional collaboration was identified in the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) landmark report on the future of nursing as essential to improving health care accessibility, quality, and value.

“How Nurse Leaders Can Fix Our Healthcare System”
This article by Campaign leadership highlights Campaign efforts to remove outdated barriers to care by advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) and the importance of nurses being “full partners with physicians and others in re-designing” the new healthcare system where consumers are at the center.
Written by Sue Hassmiller, PhD, RN, FAAN, senior adviser for nursing, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and director of the Campaign for Action, and Winifred V. Quinn, PhD, director, Advocacy & Consumer Affairs, Center to Champion Nursing in America, it was published in April 2015 in a special issue of Nurse Leader.
“A More Diverse Nursing Workforce”
This American Journal of Nursing (AJN) article highlights the Campaign’s efforts to create a more diverse nursing workforce for an increasingly diverse nation as the Institute of Medicine recommended in its landmark 2010 report. Published in May 2015 in the American Journal of Nursing, the article was written by:

“Nursing Education Transformation: Building an Infrastructure for the Future”
The article focuses on the education goals in The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, a report from the Institute of Medicine that outlined actions to advance the nursing field to best meet the country’s fast-changing health needs. The article reviews challenges and success stories in reaching a more highly educated and diverse nursing workforce.
