New Future of Nursing Study to Look to 2030: Watch Opening Session
After months of preparation, the National Academy of Medicine on March 20 will formally begin a new study, The Future of Nursing 2020-2030, and Action Coalitions are encouraged to watch the live-streamed event from 1:30 to 4 p.m. and learn about the scope of the newly planned research. It’s the start, once again, of something big and exciting for the nursing profession, so plan to watch with others who are committed to improving America’s health and health care through nursing.
Partnering again with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) will extend the vision for a nursing profession that can play an even more powerful role in helping build a Culture of Health. Among those speaking to the newly announced committee members at the opening event will be Susan B. Hassmiller, PhD, RN, FAAN, and Susan C. Reinhard, PhD, RN, FAAN.
Hassmiller, who is NAM’S senior scholar in residence at the National Academy of Medicine and adviser to its president on nursing, as well as senior adviser for nursing at RWJF and director of the Campaign for Action, will provide an overview of the first report including the recommendations, leading to the context for the second report—why it is needed, what its goals are in incorporating nurses even more into the movement to create health equity.
Reinhard, senior vice president and director of AARP’s Public Policy Institute and chief strategist of the Center to Champion Nursing in America, will review the transformation that nursing has undergone as part of the Campaign’s work since the first report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health. Advances include improved laws that have led to better access for more people to health care; a more highly educated nursing workforce; growth in the number of nurses in leadership roles; and growing diversity in nursing. Paul Kuehnert, associate vice president – program at RWJF, will outline the statement of task of the new report.
The Next Decade Will Build on the Last
The Future of Nursing recommendations of 2010 have been the blueprint that Action Coalitions and others have followed to help the nursing profession grow to meet America’s health needs. Now the future awaits, and with it, new challenges—and also new opportunities for nurses. How are nurses poised to lead efforts to improve the health and well-being of individuals, families, and communities? What is the role of nursing in addressing the social determinants of health, those conditions that have an impact on people’s health where they live, work, and play? These are some of the questions the committee will investigate.
The public session on March 20 is one of the many ways that the committee will use to gather information and assemble evidence in the course of producing findings, conclusions, and recommendations. Listen in, and be prepared in the coming months to weigh in as well, during three regional town-hall meetings May through July, that have not yet been scheduled. To fully participate, sign up with NAM for emails to stay updated as the committee members seek to understand what it will take for the profession to meet the anticipated health and social care demands from 2020 to 2030.
