Men in Nursing and Family Caregivers

A growing number of men are caring for parents or spouses, and the majority of those millions are the primary family caregiver. Discussed were the unique needs of male family caregivers led by Jean Accius, PhD, vice president of Independent Living/Long-Term Services and Supports at the AARP Public Policy Institute and Brent MacWilliams, PhD, RN, ANP, president of American Association for Men in Nursing (AAMN).
Accius spoke about the experiences specific to men as caregivers. MacWilliams discussed the growing number of men entering nursing, and his organization’s caregiving initiative. Participants:
- Identified some of the unique challenges and misconceptions facing male family caregivers
- Identified strategies nurses can use to support male caregiving
- Described AAMN’S involvement and strategic plan related to men as both professional and family caregivers
AAMN’s mission is to shape the practice, education, research, and leadership for men in nursing and advance men’s health. The session will include highlights from the organization’s recent conference.
