“Averting Nursing Shortfall” Requires Policy Change, Says Dean
“America’s looming nurse shortage”: These are well-known words to those aware of health and health care today. In an opinion piece in The Hill, the dean of the School of Health Professions at New York Institute of Technology writes that lawmakers can act to keep the looming problem from worsening.
Sheldon D. Fields, PhD, RN, FNP-BC, FAAN, calls for “common-sense” reforms to outdated regulations at both the federal and state levels. “There’s ample precedent for rolling back such outdated regulations,” Fields writes, referring to the Department of Veterans Affairs decision late last year to remove restrictions on advanced practice registered nurses in VA facilities.
Read what the Campaign has done on several topics Fields raises, including states’ efforts to improve their laws and a gathering of experts to coordinate ways to track the nursing workforce.
